Oil Paintings (2015-2018)
Technique: oil on paper
As I was doing my research for the woven paintings, I realized I needed to have more technical knowledge about traditional painting. Until then, I was an “untrained” or “spontaneous” painter, feeling more than knowing… I therefore signed for a year-long course of life drawing & traditional painting.
The experience was surprisingly hard. Indeed, I was used to provoke the unexpected, the happy accidents which would give a direction to a painting. There, the story was very different, no accidents were expected to happen, the task was crystal clear: paint what you see – and as accurate and detailed as possible.
I battled a lot with myself in order to stay on track for the task – my nature being more the kind to divert when things get stuck, and find other ways. But I wanted to learn, and to change. So even though I was submerged by frustration and the desire to give up, it was crucial for me to stay and try my best. As a matter of fact, magic happened at the end of every four-hours session, when the painting started opening up and bringing a sense of relief and achievement.
This course gave me the technical knowledge I needed, it unveiled the many stages and layers behind a composition, but moreover, I learned how to “see”.
